Nashville State Community College has formed a partnership with Matthew Walker Comprehensive Health Center in order to help individuals step into careers as medical assistants, an in-demand and important role in the healthcare field. The partnership is led by the college’s Center for Workforce Development and Continuing Education and is supported by the Ready to Reconnect workforce development program.
According to an article on Nashville State Community College’s website, John Cunningham, who serves as the Center for Workforce Development and Continuing Education’s Director of Healthcare Partnerships, was quoted as saying of the partnership, “Matthew Walker Comprehensive Health Center has been an amazing and forward-thinking community-based healthcare partner, offering both training and long-term employment pathways for adult learners. The partnership directly contributes to workforce development efforts in underserved communities across Middle Tennessee.”
The partnership will see Middle Tennessee residents entering into the nine-week medical assistant training program to become medical assistants who can work in the region’s healthcare clinics, hospitals, and physicians’ offices.
Matthew Walker Comprehensive Health Center has given paid clinical positions to three cohorts of students since the summer of 2025. So far, three students who participated through the Ready to Reconnect initiative have gained full-time medical assistant positions at the Matthew Walker Comprehensive Health Center. Six other students have found full-time employment in the field at other regional health centers.
Katrina Beard, the CEO of Matthew Walker Comprehensive Health Center, said, “We are thrilled to partner with Nashville State Community College on this meaningful initiative for our community. This program will open the door for many individuals to begin a rewarding and sustainable career in health care, and we are proud to help expand pathways to opportunity.”
