Dr. Bassam Atieh Memorial Scholarship Endowment established at Murray State University

The scholarship has been established through donations from the late Dr. Bassam Atieh’s friends and family to honor his legacy in the field of occupational safety and health.

Murray State University’s new Dr. Bassam Atieh Memorial Scholarship Endowment will support students who are pursuing their education in occupational safety and health. The scholarship honors the legacy of Dr. Bassam Atieh, who served as the departmental graduate coordinator and an advisor in the Murray State University Department of Occupational Safety and Health for more than 30 years.

According to an article on Murray State University’s website, Dr. Randal Keller, who serves as the Professor Emeritus of Occupational Safety and Health, was quoted as saying of Dr. Atieh’s legacy, “Dr. Atieh was a highly respected professor in the Department of Occupational Safety and Health at Murray State, a long-time faculty advisor to the Murray State University AIHA student section that won numerous awards, and instrumental in leading generations of students into the field of industrial hygiene. This scholarship will continue Dr. Atieh’s vision for the success of graduate students in the Department of Occupational Safety and Health.”

Dr. Atieh’s Memorial Scholarship Endowment will continue his work in supporting graduate students in the Department of Occupational Safety and Health, though now in a financial manner instead of a personally supportive manner. During his time at the university, Dr. Atieh mentored thousands of graduate students. In addition to his position within the Department of Occupational Safety and Health, he also served as the College Head of JH Richmond Residential College and as the faculty advisor to the student section of the American Industrial Hygiene Association.

Dr. Atieh’s daughter, Layal Atieh, who is also an alumna of Murray State University, said of her father, "My father was admired and respected for his accomplishments as a professor, educator and leader, but he was truly loved for his mentorship, warmth, and compassionate, generous heart. This memorial scholarship is deeply meaningful because it not only honors and celebrates his life and the profound impact he made on so many lives, but also ensures that his memory and legacy continue to live on."
