The grant comes from the Educating Character Initiative of the Program for Leadership and Character at Wake Forest University.
Ohio University has received a $50,000 Capacity Building Grant for the Honors Tutorial College, awarded through the Educating Character Initiative of the Program for Leadership and Character at Wake Forest University. The funding will support a project of the Honors Tutorial College called “‘Life is Abundant:’ Character Education in Appalachian Ohio.” The project seeks to help second year students in the Honors Tutorial College to develop their character.
According to an article on Ohio University’s website, Kristina Bross, the dean of the Honors Tutorial College, is quoted as saying of the funding, “The Honors Tutorial College is proud to be a recipient of a Character Education Initiative grant. We are excited to see how second-year students will develop their skills through deep engagement with community partners, beginning with our partnership with Passion Works Studio.”
The Honors Tutorial College is partnering with the Patton College of Education and Passion Works Studios for the project. The “Life is Abundant” project will give students in the Honors Tutorial College and the OHIO Honors Program the opportunity to explore the concepts of compassion, humility, open-mindedness, generosity, gratitude, and integrity, as well as the way those traits are evident in Appalachian Ohio. The project includes a semester-long experience that examines the cultivation of character.
The project is co-led by Mary Kate Hurley and Chris Lewis.
Hurley said, “We want to give students an opportunity to explore not only what they want to do with their lives, but the person they want to be while doing it. 'Life Is Abundant' gives them space to reflect on precisely that, while participating in a service project that brings them out of the university and into the community in a sustained way.”
Lewis added, “We believe we can meaningfully support students’ development of character traits needed for personal fulfillment, positive community impact and professional success, and simultaneously support the Passion Works Studio with its important work, via this grant.”
