Kirtland Community College partners with Central Michigan University for transfer pathways

Central Michigan University has expanded its Central Bound program, giving Kirtland Community College students the ability to prepare for Central while still attending Kirtland Community College.

Kirtland Community College and Central Michigan University have partnered through the university’s expanded Central Bound program to open up resources and pathways for Kirtland Community College students who wish to transfer into a bachelor degree program at the university. Central Bound will give Kirtland Community College students access to day-one support that will help them stay on track for transfer to the university after two years at Kirtland Community College.

According to an article on Kirtland Community College’s website, Kaleb Patrick, who serves as the vice president of CMU Online, was quoted as saying of the purpose of the Central Bound program, “Too many students lose time or momentum while trying to balance coursework across institutions. By expanding Central Bound, we are building a more student-centered experience that supports persistence, keeps credits moving, and helps learners across Michigan stay on track for degrees with both institutions.”

Central Michigan University received a grant in the amount of $650,000 from the Michigan Department of Lifelong Education, Advancement, and Potential that allowed the university to expand its Central Bound programming to several community colleges around Michigan.

Kirtland Community College serves a community that lacks access to four-year universities. The partnership will expand the opportunities individuals in the region have to pursue their education. Through the partnership with Central Michigan University, these individuals will be able to enroll in Kirtland Community College and Central Michigan University simultaneously, giving them the resources of both institutions as they navigate their college journeys.

John Thiel, who serves as Kirtland Community College’s Vice President of Academic Affairs, said, “This partnership reinforces the fact that a student can start their postsecondary journey at Kirtland Community College and transfer on to Central Michigan University to continue their studies towards a limitless future.”

Specifics of the partnership will be related by the institutions as the details are solidified.
