West Virginia Wesleyan College receives Congressionally Directed Spending funds for HVAC improvements

The funding was secured by Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV).

West Virginia Wesleyan College has received $2.583 million in Congressionally Directed Spending from the United States Department of Education to fund the enhancement or replacement of the college’s HVAC systems. The funding, which was secured by Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV), will assist the college in upgrading the heating, air conditioning, and ventilation of up to 10 buildings across campus.

According to an article on West Virginia Wesleyan College’s website, U.S. Sen. Capito was quoted as saying of the funding, “West Virginia Wesleyan plays an important role in educating and preparing the next generation of leaders in our state, and it’s important that their students and faculty can rely on the facilities in which they learn and work. Replacing these outdated systems will allow the College to invest in its students and strengthen the infrastructure of the campus for future generations. As the chairman of the Labor-HHS Appropriations Subcommittee, I was proud to help secure this allocation that will have many benefits for Wesleyan for years to come.”

The college’s HVAC systems are in need of updates, with many of them being more than 40 years old and well past their prime. With the systems’ age comes increased operation costs and decreased efficiency. The college’s boilers, chillers, and related systems will be replaced sometime in the next year, following coordination with the U.S. Department of Education. The upgrades will improve the college’s energy efficiency, safety, and comfort for students, faculty, and staff.

College president James Moore said, “We’re incredibly grateful to Senator Capito for her work on behalf of our state and her continued support of West Virginia Wesleyan College. This funding will allow the College to make substantial investments to improve or replace obsolete HVAC systems – some of which are more than 60 years old. These critical investments in WVWC’s future would not be possible without Senator Capito’s support, and will strengthen our campus infrastructure for decades to come.”
