Wittenberg University receives $1.1 million grant for energy efficient campus upgrades

The grant comes from the Ohio Department of Development and will support energy efficiency on campus, with upgrades expected to save the university more than 19% each year in utility costs.

Wittenberg University has received a grant from the Ohio Department of Development that will support the university’s campus through energy efficient upgrades and enhancements. The grant, which totals $1,103,315, will help the university save more than 19% annually in utility costs, as the grant funding will assist the university in implementing new lighting, building controls, and chillers in Tower Hall residence hall and in the Barbara Deer Kuss Science Center.

According to an article on Wittenberg University’s website, Mary Beth Walter, who serves as the university’s associate vice president for administration and chief human resources officer, was quoted as saying of the grant award, "The Ohio Department of Development's selection of Wittenberg's campus for this deep investment in our infrastructure signals the importance of Wittenberg in the state's higher education landscape. The investment also supports our ongoing forward momentum in preserving and advancing our mission.”

The grant comes via the Ohio Department of Development’s Advanced Energy Fund, which assists education institutions, businesses, and other entities with projects that will reduce energy usage. This is the fourth round of funding, with the previous three rounds awarding more than $17 million. All projects that receive funding through the Advanced Energy Fund must reduce energy costs by at least 15%.

Lydia Mihalik, director of the Ohio Department of Development, said, "What makes the Advanced Energy Fund so unique is it allows us to help organizations across all sectors stretch their dollars further. Whether it's a school, nonprofit, or a local business, these upgrades mean real savings that can be redirected toward supporting the people and communities they serve."

Wittenberg University has received three other grants in recent months, totaling around $500,000, to improve the safety and security of the campus.
