The grant comes from Lilly Endowment’s Artificial Intelligence in Higher Education (AIHE) initiative and will help the college make plans for how to address challenges and opportunities that arise with artificial intelligence use in education.
Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College has received a $125,000 phase one planning grant from Lilly Endowment’s Artificial Intelligence in Higher Education (AIHE) initiative. Lilly Endowment is giving this grant funding to education institutions throughout the state of Indiana to work through how to integrate artificial intelligence into education, including planning for how to address challenges and opportunities that will arise alongside its use.
According to an article on Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College’s website, the college’s president, President Brennan Randolph, MBA, was quoted as saying of the grant funding, “We are so grateful for the priority that Lilly Endowment Inc. has placed on investing in higher education in the state of Indiana. This planning grant will allow SMWC to evaluate opportunities that AI can bring to higher education in assisting students for successful careers.”
The college received a phase one planning grant, which gives the college funding to explore the challenges and opportunities that come along with AI use in higher education. The funding may be used for attending conferences, hiring consultants, or traveling expenses.
Janet Clark, Ph.D., who serves as provost and executive vice president for academic affairs, said, “We are excited to begin utilizing the Lilly Endowment Inc. planning grant. This will allow the College to explore how AI can enrich learning, support our faculty and ensure our students are equipped to work in a rapidly changing world.”
Once the phase one efforts have been completed by recipients, Lilly Endowment will give out phase two grants in two amounts. Implementation Grants for up to $5 million, which SMWC will receive, and Collaboration Grants for groups of institutions that can total up to $40 million.
