Bluffton University launches Pre-Occupational Therapy program

The new program is housed within the university’s Health Sciences, Natural Sciences and Mathematics Division and will prepare students for graduate-level occupational therapy programs.

Bluffton University is launching a new Pre-Occupational Therapy program, set to begin with the Fall 2026 semester. The program will prepare students with all of the skills and knowledge they will need in order to enter into a graduate-level occupational therapy program in the United States. The university has been adding to its roster of healthcare programs, as well as pre-professional programs, to match student interest in these areas.

According to an article on Bluffton University’s website, Gayle Trollinger, who serves as the university’s interim dean and vice president of academic affairs, was quoted as saying of the new program offering, “We are thrilled to introduce Bluffton’s pre-occupational therapy major, which strengthens our commitment to preparing students for purposeful careers in healthcare. This program builds on the success of our pre-physical therapy major while offering a pathway for students drawn to both the sciences and the social sciences. It’s an exciting addition that aligns beautifully with Bluffton’s mission of equipping students for lives of service, leadership and well-being.”

Occupational therapists help patients learn how to perform their daily tasks following an accident, injury, or illness that has altered an individual’s abilities. In order to prepare for this type of work, students in the Pre-Occupational Therapy program will study topics like biology, psychology, nutrition, medical terminology, health and fitness, and communication, among others.

Claire Kleman, who serves as the university’s vice president for enrollment and marketing, said of the new program, “Bluffton students are drawn to programs that combine academic excellence with compassion and purpose. The Pre-OT major is another example of how Bluffton meets real-world needs while staying true to our values. It’s a degree that prepares students not only for graduate study, but for meaningful work improving the lives of others.”

Students who graduate from the Pre-Occupational Therapy program at Bluffton University will be prepared to enroll in a graduate-level occupational therapy program. The university expects a high level of student interest following the success of other similar program launches.
