The Eagle Essentials Pantry is responding to increased demand and widespread student need by providing more meals on campus.
Morehead State University’s Eagle Essentials Pantry is expanding its offerings in light of many students on campus needing to utilize the service’s food and meals on a regular basis. The university is encouraging donations from community organizations, the campus community, and partner organizations to help keep the Eagle Essentials Pantry stocked with food and other essential items.
According to an article on Morehead State University's website, Sydnee Wellman, who serves as the campus development coordinator, explained that the demand for the Eagle Essentials Pantry is high. She is quoted as saying, “We’ve seen more need this semester than ever before. The increase in students seeking emergency assistance has been eye-opening, and we’re grateful for the campus-wide collaboration helping us respond quickly and compassionately.”
The university’s Adron Doran University Center houses the Eagle Essentials Pantry. In response to this increased demand on campus, the Pantry has introduced a number of initiatives and offerings, including refrigerated Grab and Go Meals being available on Mondays and Wednesdays, and a partnership with Aramark Dining Services called Meal Swipe Donation Program, which allows students to donate up to two of their meal card swipes a week to fellow students in need. Students in need can visit the Eagle Essentials Pantry to claim a donated swipe.
Various departments around campus are pitching in to help the Eagle Essentials Pantry stay stocked during times of high need. They are also helping to incentivize students to donate to the pantry, as well, by offering deals that will benefit the donating students. The MSU Police Department is offering to waive parking tickets in exchange for food pantry donations from November 1 to December 1, and the Housing department is offering waive one lockout charge in exchange for pantry donations from November 4 to December 4.
The university is also planning ahead to make sure that the Eagle Essentials Pantry is stocked for the holidays, as many dining locations will be closed or will have limited hours during winter break. It is encouraging alumni, students, faculty, staff, and the community to donate to ensure students staying on campus over the break will have access to the pantry.
Melisa Patrick, the director of student activities and programs, said, “These resources are more than just food and supplies—they’re a reminder that our students are seen, supported, and valued.”
