Midway University receives grant to support nursing simulation labs

Midway University has received a grant in the amount of $335,660 from the Kentucky Association of Health Plans to support the university’s nursing program. The grant will support nursing simulation labs and will allow the university to acquire more simulation and training equipment and upgrade its technology.

According to an article on Midway University’s website, university president John P. Marsden shared his gratitude for the grant. He is quoted as saying, “We are grateful for KAHP’s support of our efforts to provide students with the most engaging and effective learning environment possible. This partnership allows us to expand the tools and technology available to our nursing faculty and students, ensuring that Midway continues to lead in preparing highly capable, compassionate caregivers.”

Among the new equipment and tools the university plans to acquire thanks to the grant are advanced monitoring systems, high-fidelity patient simulators, IV training modules, and other tools and technology that will ensure nursing students are learning skills on up-to-date technology, like what students will encounter during clinical experiences and on the job.

State Senator Amanda Mays Bledsoe was present at the grant award announcement on Midway University's campus on October 24. Bledsoe is an advocate for improving access to healthcare in the region as well as improving education for healthcare workers. She said, “When we invest in Kentucky’s nursing programs, we are investing directly in our communities. Efforts like this help strengthen our health-care pipeline and improve access to care for families across the Commonwealth.”

This year, the university’s nursing program is celebrating its 60th anniversary. The program has consistently grown in the past decade, and a majority of the program’s graduates stay to work in the local area.

Tom Stephens, who serves as the president and CEO of Kentucky Association of Health Plans, said, “This partnership invests in the people who form the backbone of Kentucky’s health-care system. By supporting Midway University’s nursing simulation labs, we are helping prepare more skilled professionals who can improve patient care, expand access in communities, and advance better health for all Kentuckians.”
