The ceremonies took place on October 17, during the university’s homecoming. The two new buildings will support student academics and college life.
On October 17, 2025, Morehead State University held two ground breaking ceremonies to kick off Homecoming 2025. The two new construction projects that will soon be underway are the Multidisciplinary Academic Building and a new residence hall to replace one that was recently torn down. The university is embarking on a long-term revitalization project that will modernize campus facilities and foster a stronger sense of community among students.
According to an article on Morehead State University’s website, the university’s president, Dr. Jay Morgan, addressed attendees at the events. He is quoted as saying of the timing of the projects, “MSU was recently named the number 12 public regional university in the South, our highest ranking ever, and we were just elevated as a Carnegie Research University. Our commitment to academic excellence and student success continues with these new buildings that are meant to transform the University for generations of students to come.”
The new student housing building is expected to be completed in the Spring of 2027. According to the webpage for the revitalization projects, the new residence hall is expected to cost around $10 million and will become home to approximately 80 students. It will be modeled similarly to the new Prefontaine Hall student residence building that is currently under construction.
Thomas Clem, who is the president of the Student Government Association, spoke at the ground breaking ceremony for the new residence hall. In his remarks, he said, “One of the things I hear most often from current students is how MSU feels like a home, and the community is really like a family. With the construction of two new residence halls and hopefully more to come, MSU is making bold strides in creating a modern, comfortable living environment that reflects the warmth and connection our students already feel. Because a residence hall isn't just where students sleep, it's where they study late into the night, share meals with friends, laugh in the hallways, and build relationships that last a lifetime.”
The Multidisciplinary Academic Building is expected to be completed in the Fall of 2027. It will become home to music and business programs, featuring performance venues, classrooms, and spaces for collaboration. The building is being funded through a $90 million capital investment approved by the Kentucky General Assembly.
Speaking on behalf of the Elmer R. Smith College of Business & Technology, senior business major Andrea Newland said, “This new building is going to open even more doors, modern study spaces, areas for group projects, breakout rooms, hands-on learning environments, and so much more. Opportunities like these will help students grow, collaborate, and thrive in ways we can only begin to imagine.”
Among the other projects the university is undertaking as part of its revitalization plan are a new Main Street entrance to the university, a new Science & Engineering building, a new Soil & Plant Lab, a new 400-spot parking lot, upgrades to the Veterinary Technology facilities, and upgrades to sports facilities.
