Ashland Community and Technical College receives grants to fund nursing and radiography student scholarships

The Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education and UK King’s Daughters awarded a total of $216,000 in grants to Ashland Community and Technical College in order to provide scholarships for nursing and radiography students.

Ashland Community and Technical College is proud that it is able to facilitate an educational environment that trains highly skilled healthcare professionals who are able to make a positive impact in the industry after graduation.

Ashland Community and Technical College has recently been awarded more than $100,000 by the Healthcare Workers Investment Fund, a grant program through the Kentucky Council on Postesecondary Education (or CPE). The funds were also matched by UK King’s Daughters, meaning that the Associate Degree Nursing program has received a total of $144,000, and the Associate of Applied Science in Radiography program has received a total of $72,000.

The scholarship funding will be used to provide radiography and nursing students with job placement support and training in an attempt to address the serious healthcare workforce shortage in the Commonwealth.

In an article posted on Ashland Community and Technical College’s website, Dr. Sara Brown, who serves as the Associate Dean of Health Sciences, was quoted about the funds, saying, “We are excited to be able to provide more financial support for our students to attend college without incurring tuition debt. When UKKD met with ACTC to discuss the possibility of applying for the Healthcare Workforce Investment Fund, we were happy to collaborate on the effort. Working together to help our students and provide our local partners with students who meet their workforce needs is a primary goal at ACTC.”

UK King’s Daughters president and CEO Sara Marks was also quoted about the grants, saying, "Ashland Community and Technical College is a great partner in educating future generations of healthcare professionals. It's exciting to see this investment in the future of eastern Kentucky."

Eligible nursing and radiography students will be able to apply for the scholarships funded by these grants. A committee of two UKKD employees and two ACTC Health Sciences employees will consider the applications and choose the recipients. Students who receive the grants will then have to agree to contingent employment with UKKD in order to attain the funds. For each year the students receive scholarship money, they will be contracted to work for UKKD for a year, for a maximum of two years.
