Vincennes University and Marian University partner for Riverside Education Innovation District (REID) initiative

The Riverside Education Innovation District initiative seeks to expand access to education in the Near Northwest Area of Indianapolis, Indiana.

Vincennes University has partnered with Marian University to become an educational partner in the Riverside Education Innovation District initiative, which seeks to transform the Near Northwest Area of Indianapolis, Indiana into an area with accessible and plentiful education opportunities. The project will include the repurposing of the Larue Carter Campus, a former psychiatric hospital, into a learning center that will provide early childhood education, workforce training and development, and lifelong learning opportunities.

According to an article on Vincennes University’s website, Dr. Chuck Johnson, the university’s president, explained its role in the project. He is quoted as saying, "Vincennes University is honored to partner with Marian University, local schools, workforce development organizations, and industry leaders to be part of a bold and transformative initiative that will empower students and communities in the Near Northwest Indianapolis area. Partnerships such as this are vital for building our state's bright economic future and creating opportunities for Hoosiers of all generations. With this exciting opportunity, Vincennes University aims to work alongside President Elsener and Marian University to help build an even stronger future for Near Northwest Indianapolis and the entire region."

Vincennes University will provide career and technical education to high schoolers in the Near Northwest Area. The university expects that by 2027, it will be offering at least 10 career and technical education programs to students from all around the city in areas such as automotive technology and repair, welding, advanced manufacturing, precision machining, cybersecurity, and law enforcement, all of which are in-demand careers in the region.

Dr. Lori Pence, who serves as the Associate Provost of K-12 Programs and Partnerships at Vincennes University, said, "By focusing on high-demand fields, we are dedicated to equipping students with the skills and knowledge they need to make impactful contributions in their chosen professions. We commit to delivering an innovative blend of comprehensive training, immersive hands-on experiences, and access to cutting-edge industry insights. Our goal is to empower students to excel in their educational and career aspirations and emerge as leaders in their community and region."

Outside of the programs for high schoolers, the university intends to also offer adult education programs outside of normal working hours to give adults in the Near Northwest Area the opportunity to pursue their own educational goals. Additionally, Vincennes University plans to facilitate apprenticeship programs with the region’s major employers.

Marian University’s president Daniel J. Elsener said of the project, "We are honored to welcome Vincennes University to the Near Northwest Area as a critical part of the Riverside Education Innovation District initiative. When we shared our vision with President Johnson, Vincennes immediately stepped forward to help make it a reality. Vincennes' new career and technical education programs will create opportunity and upward mobility for students and families in the area."
