Motlow State Community College to offer six-week biotech training program

The training program will prepare adults to work in STEM careers. The paid program will provide participants with $20 an hour who will be able to sit for the Biotechnology Aptitude and Competency Exam.

Motlow State Community College is offering a new opportunity this August that will pay adult learners to participate in a six-week biotech training program. The opportunity, which is the result of a partnership between Motlow State Community College and Vanderbilt University, will help adults ages 18 and up become equipped with the foundational skills needed to pivot into a STEM-related job in just six weeks.

According to an article on Motlow State Community College’s website, Dr. Tony Millican, the college’s Executive Vice President for Workforce and Community Development, was quoted as saying, “We are excited to announce this partnership with Vanderbilt that is made possible by a grant from the National Science Foundation and the Tennessee Board of Regents. This will help more adults play vital roles in the STEM world and get there faster. The faster we can help them obtain good jobs, the faster they can succeed.”

Adults ages 18 and up are eligible to sign up for the six-week training program, regardless of their prior education. Classes start on August 18 and will take place five evenings a week. Starting with week five, the program will move to a hybrid schedule. Participants will be paid $20 per hour to take part in the program, allowing them to earn a wage while studying to begin a new career.

The types of careers students may be qualified to pursue after completing the program include Good Manufacturing, Good Documentation Processing, Aseptic Technique and Processing, Lab Safety, Quality Control, Quality Assurance, Forensics, Food Safety, Pharmaceutical Production, Genetic Testing, Biotechnology Startups, and University Research.

Individuals interested in registering for the program may visit the training program’s page.
