University of Akron Wayne College receives grant to support nursing program

The grant comes from the Carl E. Congdon, Jr. and Susanna Congdon McIntyre Memorial Fund at Wayne County Community Foundation and will support the college’s Nursing Space and Equipment initiative.

University of Akron Wayne College has received funding support from the Carl E. Congdon, Jr. and Susanna Congdon McIntyre Memorial Fund at Wayne County Community Foundation for its Nursing Space and Equipment Initiative, which aims to improve the facilities the college has in place for its new Associate Degree in Nursing program, which just began in the Spring 2025 semester.

According to an article on the University of Akron Wayne College’s website, Amber Murray, who serves as the Director of the Associate Degree Nursing Program, was quoted as saying, “This is an exciting time for our ADN program at Wayne College. With access to advanced facilities and specialized equipment, our students will gain the hands-on experience needed to become confident, highly skilled registered nurses. We are incredibly grateful for this support as we prepare them to make a meaningful impact in healthcare!”

Wayne College's Nursing Space and Equipment initiative seeks to provide dedicated classroom and laboratory space as well as specialized equipment for students in the new Associate Degree in Nursing program. The new program has 100 students who are completing program prerequisites, and the school estimates that there will be 40 new students starting the program every year, beginning in the Fall 2025 semester.

The Associate Degree in Nursing program has been created at Wayne College to help fill the regional workforce gaps in the nursing industry. The program provides foundational knowledge and can serve as a stepping stone for students who are interested in further pursuing nursing education in a Bachelor of Science in Nursing program.
