Wright State University’s Boonshoft School of Medicine receives gift to fund scholarships

The $1.5 million gift comes from the estate of Mary L. Marshall Sidorsky, M.D.

Wright State University’s Boonshoft School of Medicine has received an estate gift from Mary L. Marshall Sidorsky, M.D., who was a volunteer faculty member at the beginning of the existence of Wright State University’s School of Medicine. Her estate gift will fund scholarships for medical students who are in financial need.

According to an article on Wright State University’s website, Sue Edwards, Ph.D., the university’s president, was quoted as saying of the gift, “Dr. Sidorsky’s estate gift will fund this scholarship for generations of medical students to come. Her life and career will serve as an inspiration to our students. Dr. Sidorsky’s generosity will allow us to continue graduating highly trained medical professionals who will serve countless patients throughout our region, state and nation.”

Sidorsky was only the second woman to ever complete a residency in pathology at the University of Michigan. She later taught pathology to medical students at Wright State University as a volunteer faculty member not long after the School of Medicine was first opened. She went on to practice anatomic and clinical pathology at Miami Valley Hospital until her retirement in 1990.

Gregory Toussaint, M.D., the interim dean of the Boonshoft School of Medicine, said, “Dr. Sidorsky was a leading pioneer in her field. We will always be grateful for the impact made on our students through her teaching and her legacy will continue at Wright State through this scholarship.”

The Mary L. Marshall, M.D., Scholarship will be available to Boonshoft School of Medicine students who are in good academic standing and are in financial need.
