The School of Interdisciplinary Data Science will fall under the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics and is going to offer new degree programs and foster relationships between different academic departments.
The University of Toledo’s new School of Interdisciplinary Data Science will become an avenue for the university to foster relationships between academic departments and provide for more collaboration, as well as house new degree programs that will give students the ability to study the growing field of data science.
According to an article on the University of Toledo’s website, Dr. Scott Molitor, who serves as the interim provost and executive vice president for academic affairs at the university, explained the high demand for data scientists and how the new School of Interdisciplinary Science will prepare students for these careers. He is quoted as saying, “It’s hard to imagine an industry today that doesn’t need to collect, analyze and interpret data to make informed decisions. Students interested in any applications of data science will build a strong foundation for their future careers through opportunities created by the School of Interdisciplinary Data Science. We expect our academic program offerings in data-related fields will grow as this new school brings together faculty from across the University and more students excited about the career opportunities available for data scientists.”
The university already has an existing bachelor of science in data science program, which launched in 2020, and a bachelor of arts degree in data analytics program, and with the formation of the School of Interdisciplinary Data Science, more programs and courses are planned, including an online master of science in data science program. The School of Interdisciplinary Data Science will be directed by Dr. Bill Kalies, who is a professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics and the current director of the Data Science Program. Joining Dr. Kalies are instructors and professors from various departments, who now have joint appointments, including individuals from the College of Arts and Letters, College of Engineering, College of Health and Human Services, College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, and the Judith Herb College of Education.
Speaking of the collaborative nature that is envisioned for the new School of Interdisciplinary Data Science, Dr. Marc Seigar, the dean of the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, said, “The School of Interdisciplinary Data Science will provide a structure under which our faculty can discuss innovative approaches to the use of data in modern society, develop cutting-edge courses and programs and initiate interdisciplinary research projects.”
