Northern Michigan University’s automotive technology students have access to a brand new 2023 Ford Escape to practice their skills on, courtesy of Fox Marquette and Ford Motor Company. The donation will give students the opportunity to learn current technology and help them become equipped to work in the automotive industry.
According to an article on Northern Michigan University’s website, Randal Klitzke, who is an associate professor of automotive technology, explained how the donated car will benefit students and the area’s vehicle owners. He is quoted as saying, “This vehicle is a quadruple win for our program, the students, industry and consumers. It helps our program stay current now and in the future, because this particular technology will be on the road 10-20 years from now. It's also a real benefit to the students to leave our program having worked on a vehicle they're likely to see again. And it's a win for industry that requires qualified technicians to service their vehicles. Overall, this is a great example of how we work with our local and corporate partners to move the industry forward. And consumers who rely on professionals to run diagnostics, repair and maintain their vehicles also benefit.”
Speaking further about the relationship between the program and dealerships, Klitzke added, “With dealer-sponsored career exploration programs like Ford's offered in partnership with secondary and post-secondary institutions, there's a specific curriculum that matches the vehicles. It's the same courses that certified Ford/Lincoln technicians receive and they're continually updated. That's a big perk for our program and recognizes that educators, students and partner dealerships are all in this together.”
The automotive technology program at Northern Michigan University teaches its students to become problem solvers by giving them the opportunity for hands-on learning experiences. In addition to typical mechanic skills, students also learn mechanical engineering, electrical systems, and computer diagnostics. The university offers programs in Automotive Service Technology, Automotive Service, and Automotive Maintenance.
Luke Hubbard, the general manager of Fox Marquette, spoke about the decision to donate the Ford Focus to the Northern Michigan University automotive technology program. He said, "We're proud to support the future of the automotive industry by donating this vehicle to NMU's automotive technology program. Investing in hands-on learning helps develop the next generation of skilled technicians, aligning with our passion at Fox Motors for expanding knowledge and strengthening the industry. NMU's program and values reflect our culture of fostering growth and professional development within our team. This donation also aligns with our Fox Motors Technician Program, which provides a clear path for aspiring automotive technicians to refine their skills and earn state and manufacturer certifications."
