Southwest Tennessee Community College establishes partnership with LeMoyne-Owen College

The Memorandum of Understanding between Southwest Tennessee Community College, a Predominantly Black Institution, and LeMoyne-Owen College, a Historically Black College/University, will strengthen educational pathways and solidify their existing relationship.

Southwest Tennessee Community College and LeMoyne-Owen College have recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding that is expected to provide students with seamless transfer pathways and enhanced workforce development opportunities. The two schools, located in Memphis, Tennessee, are a Predominantly Black Institution and a Historically Black College/University, respectively.

According to an article on Southwest Tennessee Community College’s website, the college’s President Tracy D. Hall was quoted as saying, “This MoU is more than an agreement—it’s a bridge to opportunity. Together, Southwest and LeMoyne-Owen are providing a foundation for lifelong success and building a legacy of educational excellence.” Hall added, “I am thrilled to formalize this partnership with LeMoyne-Owen College. This MoU reflects our shared commitment to empower students to achieve their educational and professional goals. I am excited for our graduates and the opportunities this agreement will provide them.”

The Memorandum of Understanding will solidify the partnership between the institutions in three main ways. First, graduates of Southwest Tennessee Community College who have obtained an associate degree will enjoy a seamless process to transfer credits to LeMoyne-Owen College to continue their education and earn a bachelor degree. Second, the MOU will allow for cross-cultural exchange between the two campuses, providing students with opportunities to learn from students at the other school, including shared initiatives and peer mentorship. Third, the two schools will work on workforce development initiatives to benefit students at both institutions as well as the Memphis community as a whole.

Christopher B. Davis, the president of LeMoyne-Owen College said, “LeMoyne-Owen College is proud to welcome Southwest students into our programs. This partnership represents a significant step forward in creating accessible, high-quality education pathways that benefit our students and our community.”

The signing ceremony for the Memorandum of Understanding took place on January 23, 2025, and included remarks from both presidents and a reception following the ceremony.
