The scholarship, the Lloyd and Barbara Porter Engineering Scholarship Endowment, was established by Lloyd Porter in memory of his late wife, whom he described by saying she “epitomized the proverbial expression of ‘domestic engineer.’”
Roane State Community College has a new scholarship opportunity available to students pursuing pre-engineering thanks to the establishment of the Lloyd and Barbara Porter Engineering Scholarship Endowment. Lloyd Porter gifted $100,000 to the Roane State Foundation to endow the scholarship in memory of his late wife, Barbara.
According to an article on Roane State Community College’s website, Lloyd Porter explained that though he graduated from the University of Tennessee’s College of Engineering, he was in awe of his wife’s abilities as a “domestic engineer.” He is quoted as saying, “Most importantly, I created this scholarship endowment to celebrate Barbara’s legacy. She was a skilled seamstress, had superior culinary skills, created crafts by hand, loved gardening, and used her ‘domestic engineering’ skills in managing all of the day-to-day activities in our home. Her stamina, creativeness, and professionalism were phenomenal.”
Lloyd attended community college following being discharged from the US Navy. He received a work scholarship to help fund his community college education before he transferred to the University of Tennessee’s College of Engineering. He understands firsthand how useful a scholarship can be when pursuing a college education. Lloyd hopes that this endowment in his wife’s memory, who was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, will allow future engineers to pursue their dreams.
Scott Niermann, who serves as the executive director of the Roane State Foundation, was quoted as saying of Lloyd Porter’s donation, “The generosity of the Porter family will allow many future engineers at Roane State to continue their education. We are grateful for their kindhearted support of Roane State students. The Foundation is honored to be part of honoring Barbara Porter’s life and legacy. This new endowment will provide support to Roane State pre-engineering students for many generations.”
