Bluefield State University joins Expand Appalachia Project

The university is partnering with Virginia Tech and other institutions for the Department of Energy’s Expand Appalachia Project, specifically to help characterize the region’s critical minerals.

Bluefield State University has partnered with Virginia Tech and other educational institutions to take part in the US Department of Energy’s Expand Appalachia Project, which aims to support regional growth and job creation via sustainable mineral development opportunities. Bluefield State University’s Mining Engineering Technology Program, which was just reintroduced in 2024, will be taking part in the project.

According to an article on Bluefield State University’s website, Dr. Darrin Martin, the president of Bluefield State University, was quoted as saying of the university’s involvement in the project, “This collaboration represents a transformative opportunity for Bluefield State University and our entire region. As the only HBCU with a mining engineering program, our participation in this consortium strengthens our mission to provide cutting-edge educational opportunities while contributing to the economic revitalization of Appalachia. This partnership will create valuable research opportunities for our students, faculty, and local industry while helping to secure America’s critical mineral supply chain.”

The Expand Appalachia Project is valued at $9.56 million, with $7.5 million committed by the US Department of Energy and $2.06 million coming from other sources. Other members of the consortium include the University of Kentucky, Penn State University, West Virginia University, as well as government agencies and other industry leaders.

Brad Crabtree, who serves as the Assistant Secretary of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management, said of the project, “Rebuilding a domestic supply chain for critical minerals and materials here at home will both safeguard our national security and support the continued development of a clean energy and industrial economy. DOE is investing in collaborative regional projects to help us realize our nation’s full potential for recovery of these vital resources while creating high-wage jobs and delivering environmental benefits for communities across the United States.”
