Calvin University enters partnership with Consumers Energy for clean energy initiative

Calvin University and Consumers Energy have a 20-year commitment that will see the energy company meeting 100% of the university’s energy consumption needs with wind and solar power.

Calvin University has entered into a 20-year partnership agreement with Consumers Energy that will turn the university’s power usage into 100% clean energy consumption. The energy supplier has committed to providing all of the university’s energy needs via clean, renewable sources such as wind and solar power. This change will move forward the university’s continued efforts to promote environmental sustainability.

According to an article on Calvin University’s website, the university’s president Greg Elzinga was quoted as saying of the partnership, “This partnership reflects Calvin University’s deep dedication to creation care and sustainable flourishing for all. As a Christian liberal arts institution, we see this as a joyful response to God’s call to steward the Earth responsibly. Through our collaboration with Consumers Energy, we are not only reducing our environmental footprint but also serving as a model for how institutions can lead in the fight against climate change.”

Annually, the university’s energy consumption averages 21 million kWh, which Consumers Energy has pledged to supply solely through clean energy sources. The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that this change will have a profound impact on the environment in several ways. The reduction in emissions is comparable to removing 1,895 gas-powered cars from the roads or keeping 690,619 trash bags from entering garbage dumps.

Lauren Snyder, who serves as the vice president of customer experience for Consumers Energy, said, “Calvin University’s leadership in choosing 100% renewable energy under our program underscores the critical role institutions play in shaping a sustainable future alongside us. This partnership will have a lasting impact, driving the growth of clean energy infrastructure and reducing carbon emissions across our state.”

This initiative is the latest in Calvin University’s efforts of environmental sustainability. The university has also implemented a curriculum that is focused on sustainability, created a Plaster Creek Stewards program, and has established a nature preserve education center.
