Ferris State University forms partnership with Audio Engineers of Detroit

The agreement will allow students who take courses with Audio Engineers of Detroit to receive college credit at Ferris State University, with the intention of creating a pathway to receiving a Television and Digital Media Production degree from the university.

Ferris State University has formed a new agreement with Audio Engineers of Detroit, a training facility for audio production located in the Detroit area, that will allow students who train through the organization to receive college credit for their work at Ferris State University. The partnership creates a pathway that allows these students to pursue a Television and Digital Media Production degree from the university.

The partnership was pursued through conversations between Glen Okonoski, who is the university’s School of Digital Media Director, and Robin Kinnie, who is the Chief Executive Officer and President of Audio Engineers of Detroit. The two are acquainted via their involvement in the Michigan Association of Broadcasters.

Students who are studying with Audio Engineers of Detroit will have the opportunity to apply their training with AED to college credit at Ferris State University to work toward an associate or bachelor degree in the Television and Digital Media Production program. Additionally, Audio Engineers of Detroit will develop online coursework that will in turn be available to students who are taking the program on Ferris State University’s Big Rapids, Michigan campus.

In an article on Ferris State University's website, Okonoski discussed the details of the partnership, saying, “We talked about the prospects of collaboration as their coursework provides an augmented level of training, specifically in audio content creation. Our Bachelor of Science in Television and Digital Media Production would allow the students to start in the AED program, then continue and expand their training at Ferris.”

He added that the partnership is in accordance with the university president’s desires, as well, stating, “We are also discussing augmentation of Ferris State’s Broadcast Engineering minor to offer that training for Audio Engineers of Detroit students in Detroit. This is very much in line with President Bill Pink’s desire to recruit and engage more students from the Detroit market and its metropolitan area.”

Kinnie explained that the partnership will open doors for students, saying, “At the heart of innovation is education, and by partnering with Ferris State University, we're empowering the next generation of audio engineers in Detroit. This collaboration isn't just about teaching skills—it's about unlocking potential, fostering creativity, and shaping the future of the music and technology industries.”
