Christian Brothers University recognized by Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development for contributions to Memphis community

The university was named as a Centennial Institution for the myriad ways it has contributed to the Memphis area’s economy and opportunity.

Christian Brothers University has been recognized by the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development as a Centennial Institution. The recognition comes due to Christian Brothers University’s contributions to the community and economy of the Memphis area.

According to an article on Christian Brothers University’s website, Brother Chris Englert, who serves as the interim president of the university, was quoted as saying, “This recognition is a testament to the strength of CBU’s mission and the unwavering support of our faculty, students, alumni, and community partners. For 153 years, the Brothers have served this community with education for all, and we proudly stand on the shoulders of those who came before us. We are honored to be among Tennessee’s legacy institutions and remain committed to empowering individuals and uplifting our community for generations to come.”

Christian Brothers University was founded in 1871 and has been serving the Memphis community ever since, through its commitment to providing education, fostering economic development, and preparing generations of community leaders. 

The Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development implemented an initiative to recognize the organizations and institutions throughout Memphis that have been operating for more than a century and have had an impact on the community, as well as recognizing them for the plans they have to continue doing so in the future.

Blake Swaggart, who is the Regional Director of the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development, said of Christian Brothers University’s recognition, “We thank CBU for the invaluable service provided to this community through education and by preparing talent for the workforce. Our role at the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development is to collaborate with partners and city leaders to recruit new industries to Tennessee, but just as importantly, to support our existing businesses by helping them find the talent they need.”
