Blue Ridge Community and Technical College receives funding from Valley Health to update simulation lab
Valley Health Systems contributed $25,000 to the school to enhance its simulation lab, helping to ensure healthcare students are learning on updated technology.
Blue Ridge Community and Technical College has received $25,000 from Valley Health to upgrade and enhance its campus simulation lab. The school’s Allied Health Division uses the simulation lab to train students in different healthcare technologies and situations.
According to an article on Blue Ridge Community and Technical College’s website, the program manager for Valley Health, Fay Shadley-Mullin, BS MLS, was quoted as saying of the health system’s contribution toward the enhancements, “I was privileged to see first-hand how the College has used the Valley Health funds to provide the best equipment for the Health Sciences programs. It was a pleasure to witness the high-quality instruction taking place in the SIMS lab with the modern equipment Valley Health provided for the students.”
Among the upgrades facilitated by the contribution from Valley Health were the addition of a medication dispensing system and updates to the simulation lab’s existing simulated patients. The medication dispensing system mimics those found in hospital settings, giving students experience in the types of equipment they will be expected to use if they pursue a career in the hospital.
Blue Ridge Community and Technical College’s Allied Health Division includes training and education for several allied health-related pursuits, including medical assistant, paramedic, and registered nurse. As one of the largest employers in the region, Valley Health has an interest in giving those who are pursuing these careers the opportunity to receive a quality education with up-to-date technology, like what is used in its own hospitals.
