Jackson State Community College to offer free workforce training thanks to grant from UpSkill Mid-South

The grant will cover tuition and material costs for all students who want to participate, resulting in free workforce credentials for eligible individuals.

Jackson State Community College is again partnering with UpSkill Mid-South to offer free workforce training and credentials to eligible participants who wish to enhance their skills or make it easier to change careers. The training begins on September 9 and will run through December 12.

According to an article on Jackson State Community College’s website, Tom Pigg, who serves as the Executive Director of Workforce Solutions, was quoted as saying of the opportunity, “Our first cohort of students was a great success, so much so that the team at UpSkill Mid-South wanted to see us host another cohort of students. The program speaks for itself, allowing students to earn industry-recognized credentials such as OSHA 30, FANUC Certified Robot Operator, and more. Our last cohort earned these credentials at no out-of-pocket cost, so it’s an excellent opportunity to get ahead if you are making a career pivot or looking to earn college credit for our Engineering Systems Technology program.”

In order to be eligible for the training program, participants must be over 18, unemployed, or underemployed and working fewer than 30 hours a week and making less than $15 an hour. Participants must also live in West Tennessee, Northern Mississippi, or Northwestern Arkansas.

The program consists of 10 courses and covers topics like robotics, tool identification, work ethic, digital skills, OSHA 30 safety training, and mechatronics, among others. In total, the program will provide 225 hours of industry certification training. Students will be able to work around their current work schedule, as the classes will take place in the evening over 14 weeks.

In addition to the workforce certifications, the program will also provide the ability for students to transfer up to 15 credits to the Engineering Systems Technology degree at Jackson State Community College. Students will also have access to the Advanced Maintenance Technician work cooperative and its industry partners.

The program will take place in the Ned R. McWherter Center.
