Fairmont State University receives federal funding to upgrade nursing program and campus security

The funding comes as Congressionally Directed Spending from the offices of US senators Shelley Moore Capito and Joe Manchin.

Fairmont State University has received $6,890,000 in Congressionally Directed Spending from US senators Shelley Moore Capito and Joe Manchin, which the school will spend on three major projects: upgrading the nursing program, upgrading campus security, and renovating the library.

According to an article on Fairmont State University’s website, Christy Burner, who serves as the Director of Grants and Sponsored Programs at Fairmont State University, was quoted as saying of the funding, “Receiving federal funding for these projects will have a tremendous impact on campus. These appropriations will go directly towards improving essential educational facilities, enhancing campus security, and providing our students with the learning environment they need to achieve excellence.”

Of the total funding the school has received, nearly $3 million of it will go toward upgrading the nursing program facilities. The Nursing Simulation Center will be relocated from its current home in Colebank Hall to the Education Building, which is where the rest of the nursing program classrooms are. Additionally, the Education Building’s first floor will need to be renovated in order to be able to house the Nursing Simulation Center, which will be outfitted with updated technology and equipment thanks to the funding.

In order to upgrade campus security, $1.7 million of funding will be utilized. The school will be moving away from keyed entry and toward keycard access only. The funding will upgrade keycard access to residential halls and the Engineering Technology Building.

Finally, more than $2 million will be put toward renovating the Ruth Ann Musick Library. A centralized student gathering area will be constructed to help foster relationships between students. There will also be energy efficient upgrades.

“We are grateful to Senators Capito and Manchin for their long-standing support of Fairmont State. This federal funding will support investments that help make Fairmont State University a truly ‘Great Place to Learn, to Work, and to Call Home’,” said president Mike Davis.
