Mott Community College earns recognition from nonprofit for its intentionality in serving students who are parents

Generation Hope, a nonprofit organization focused on supporting student parents, created the FamilyU seal, which Mott Community College earned.

Mott Community College has earned the first Generation Hope FamilyU Seal, which signifies that the school is intentionally providing support and opportunities for its students who are parents. Mott Community College is one of 14 institutions that has earned the certification seal as part of the debut cohort.

According to an article on Mott Community College’s website, Dr. Beverly Walker-Griffea, who is the president of Mott Community College, was quoted expressing her gratitude for the recognition. She said, “We are honored to be named one of the first FamilyU Seal recipients. We have made a commitment to helping our student parents succeed and thrive at Mott Community College, through wrap-around support systems including on-campus childcare, a food pantry and social services, all co-located on our main campus.”

Generation Hope is a nonprofit organization with the mission “To ensure all student parents have the opportunities to succeed, experience economic mobility, and build wealth, Generation Hope engages education and policy partners to drive systemic change and provides direct support to teen parents in college as well as their children through holistic, two-generation programming,” according to its website. Generation Hope created the FamilyU Seal in order to recognize and honor the schools that are helping to champion its mission by providing services and support to students who are parents.

In addition to Mott Community College, the schools that were selected to bear the FamilyU Seal this year were George Mason University, Madison College, Misericordia University Ruth Matthews Bourger Women with Children Program, Montgomery College, Mount Mary University, Mount Wachusett Community College, Northern Virginia Community College, Oregon State University, Palo Alto College, San Diego Mesa College, St. Catherine University, Trinity Washington University, and Jeremiah Program. These schools all earned the seal because they operate within the framework of Generation Hope’s FamilyU program to cater to student parents, offer support services to them, and strive to become more inclusive environments for students with young families.
