Davenport University works with Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency to offer scholarships

The program provides a path for veterans to find employment and educational opportunities in a setting built around their needs.

A partnership between Davenport University and Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency (MVAA) will allow for employees of almost 400 companies to qualify for scholarships. The companies whose employees are eligible to apply have been designated by the state agency as Veteran-Friendly Employers (VFEs) and they collectively employ over 30,000 Michigan veterans. The scholarship program aims to reduce barriers to higher education for veterans and can be used at any of Davenport University's six campuses. It is also part of a wider initiative to increase the number of Michigan adults with post-secondary education degrees or certifications.

In a recent release, Davenport University President Dr. Richard J. Pappas spoke about the potential for this partnership to improve access to education for Michigan veterans, "This new partnership helps remove barriers so veterans can continue their education, and we're honored to help employees of these veteran-friendly businesses pursue their academic dreams, as well. By offering these scholarships in partnership with the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency, we're able to help people currently in the workforce complete their bachelor's or master's degree, or pursue professional training to enhance their skills or gain industry-recognized certifications." Davenport is a Gold-Level Veteran Friendly School (VFS), a designation awarded to colleges and universities that demonstrate a commitment to meeting the needs of veterans and students currently in the military. At Davenport, these efforts include career services, student-led organizations, and other veteran-specific benefits.

Scholarships available are based on the VFE program level of the employer. There are gold, silver, and bronze level designations among businesses recognized as VFEs. The scholarships are renewable and applicable to 22 credit-hours per year for four years. The VFE program was established by MVAA in 2013 and has been recognized as one of the country's most well-developed veterean-focused initiatives. Membership in the program grew by over 50% last year, attracting many companies wanting to participate in providing employment for veterans. Davenport has an informational page set up for anyone who wants to learn more and to apply for the scholarship.
