Central Ohio Technical College opens newly renovated campus in Pataskala

A $4.2 million renovation of the Pataskala campus of COTC is complete. The updates include new lab spaces and classrooms that administrators say will help develop a skilled workforce, particularly in healthcare and information technology.

A ribbon-cutting for the redesigned Pataskala campus of Central Ohio Technical College (COTC) was held August 27 and featured speeches from political leaders and college officials, according to a recent news release from COTC. The renovations include an updated computer lab, a nursing lab, and classrooms. Additionally, the facility was fitted with new HVAC and fire suppression systems.

COTC President John M. Berry, PhD., said at the ribbon cutting that the improvements to the campus will help the region meet the need for skilled workers. "As the population growth in this area continues to multiply and more and more employers look at the western Licking County front and eastern Franklin County region, the accessibility of affordable higher education is not just important — it's a necessity. COTC needs to meet the educational needs of more local students and the increased workforce needs of more local employers. The renovation of this facility is that first step."

Congressman Troy Balderson and Pataskala Mayor Mike Compton were both on hand for the event. Mayor Compton spoke about the collaboration between the city and the college. "I'm extremely proud of our relationship with COTC. I'm excited for the future of this school and the city. I believe, hand-in-hand, we will continue to grow and prosper responsibly," Compton said.

A nursing student was invited to participate in the ribbon-cutting ceremony as well. Ambika Karki is a second-year student in the RN program who plans to transfer upon graduation to earn a bachelor’s degree in nursing. Karki reacted to the renovations, saying, "Is this really my college? It's really nice inside. It looks amazing."

Plans to expand the COTC campus in Pataskala are in the works as well, with a planned 5,800 square foot addition which will hold more computer labs and community gathering spaces.
