Purdue University Global professor recognized for presentation; "Becoming a major league leader"

Professor is honored for her leadership presentation at a regional ACBSP conference and will present again at the national conference next year.

Purdue University Global professor, Dr. Rebecca Herman, was honored by the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP) for her presentation on leadership which pairs her expertise about baseball and business leadership. The honors came at the ACBSP's Region 4 conference. Region 4 includes schools from Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, Michigan, Ohio, and Wisconsin. In addition to the regional recognition, Dr. Herman will be invited to present at the national conference in June 2021 in Miami.

Dr. Herman's interest in baseball stems from a deep familial connection to the gamer. Her maternal grandmother, Jenny Rausch played professionally during WWII for a team called Acos Candy Kids. Dr. Herman even played an extra in the file "A League of Their Own." Her love for baseball and her acumen for business lead her to a research project called "Lead Me Out to the Ballgame." Dr. Herman teamed up with Howard Fero to write an in-depth analysis of leadership styles that are employed by successful Major League Baseball managers to encourage teamwork and build a successful ballclub. The research was published as a book, also called "Lead Me Out to the Ballgame".

Dr. Herman's presentation was based on the findings of the book. She developed the presentation as part of the curriculum for her graduate business courses at Purdue Global. Her presentation details a roadmap to leadership which relies on baseball terms as a metaphor. The steps include; first base (self leadership), second base (leading others), third base (leading the game), and home plate (major league leader). Combined, the steps provide a playbook by which someone can build their leadership skills into a winning career.

In regards to the recognition, Dr. Herman said in a press release that, "I am truly honored to have been selected for this award. There were many fascinating presentations, and each communicated important thought leadership on how we can effectively develop business leaders for a better tomorrow. To be selected motivates me even more to always deliver the best content to my students and help them achieve their goals and live their dreams."

Purdue Global vice president, Jeffrey Buck, said of Dr. Herman, "This is a well-deserved accomplishment and an appropriate recognition. Dr. Herman has excellent knowledge on leadership, and she is clearly a skilled presenter. Being selected as recipient of this honor is impressive, and it serves to further enhance the reputation of Purdue Global."
