Students, staff, and alumni of Miami Valley Career Technology Center volunteer for river clean-up event

Future Farmers of America students from MVCTC joined with staff and alumni to clean areas of the Stillwater River and learn about conservation and canoeing.

A total of sixteen Miami Valley Career Technology Center students, four alumni, and two advisors came together in June for a clean-up event on the Stillwater River. With guidance from the Montgomery County Soil and Water Conservation District, participants canoed down the river, cleaning up trash and learning about conservation. The volunteers were awarded for their efforts with pizza from Pizza Factory.

According to a news release from the college, Mike Mullen and Nick Wheeler, both MVCTC grads who work for the Montgomery County Soil and Water Conservation District, met with students and faculty advisors Joe Beringer and Dr. Christa Nealeigh to provide education on the conservation project to clean up the river. The students, members of Future Farmers of America, traveled along the river in canoes for the event, cleaning up the river as they went.

Dr. Nealeigh said of the clean-up event, "Thank you to our great guides from the Montgomery County Soil and Water Conservation District, who are also MVCTC alumni! They provided our students with expert advice on canoeing techniques and provided the supplies and coordination needed to teach our students about community service projects combined with outdoor recreation. Also, a big shout out to Pizza Factory for fueling our kids with pizza!"
