Gateway Community and Technical College reconfigures child care services aid pandemic

Students at Gateway Community and Technical College are now able to apply for vouchers to help cover the costs of childcare. The program is one way the college is adapting to COVID-19 and reduce the barriers faced by many in getting an education beyond high school.

As with so many aspects of life in 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic is prompting major changes in how Gateway Community and Technical College offers child care services to students. In previous years, Gateway has partnered with Learning Grove, offering access to a childcare facility right on campus. With most classes transitioning to a virtual format, the logistical needs of students have changed in terms of childcare. In response, Gateway has made vouchers available to eligible students, redeemable at other Learning Grove locations.

The decision was made as Gateway and Learning Grove were forced to shut down the on-site childcare facility on campus. The move was necessary as most classes were no longer being held on campus amid the pandemic. The shift in learning platform did not lessen the need for childcare, as many students are still working full time while also participating in online courses. Gateway recognized that the flexibility in education format needed to be translated to flexibility in childcare offerings. Difficulty in accessing childcare is a common barrier to achieving education goals for Gateway students. In answer to this dilemma, the school has started offering vouchers to qualified students to offset the costs of childcare.

Students can apply for the voucher program through Gateway at https://gateway.kctcs.edu/current-students/student-resources/childcare-interest.aspx. When approved, the vouchers can be used at the Learning Grove childcare centers that have remained open. The voucher program is part of a broader effort to increase access to education in frequently underserved segments of the community. Other efforts include an expansion of night class courses and a focus on programs that fit the changing needs of regional employers.
