New program at Roane State Community College brings free healthcare services to students

The arrangement between RSCC and The Free Medical Clinic will extend the clinic's services to qualifying students at all Roane State campuses.

In an agreement that may be the first of its kind in the country, Roane State Community College and The Free Medical Clinic have established a relationship that will allow in-need students to access medical care through the clinic. The clinic has historically restricted eligibility to residents of Roane, Morgan, and Anderson counties. The new partnership will extend access to students of Roane State whose official residence is in other counties. Eligibility is based on income.

Services available to Roane State students through the clinic include flu shots, lab work, annual physicals, and telehealth video calls. There are two locations for students to choose from, one in Oak Ridge and one in Harriman. Administrators at Roane State Community College are pleased to add healthcare access to the list of services being provided for struggling students right now. The college also has programs in place to assist students with food and housing as well as assistance with technology access, all of which can help students stay on track for degree completion. Roane State President Chris Whaley said in a news release, "We have tried to make sure we are working to meet the variety of needs we know our students have. I'm just excited for us to add another resource to help our students."

Students who wish to access this no-cost healthcare must register with The Free Medical Clinic at its headquarters in Oak Ridge. Students must not have health insurance and be able to provide a photo ID, proof of income, and proof of enrollment at Roane State Community College.
