Ancilla College enters partnership, creates new institution with Marian University

Ancilla College has entered an agreement with Marian University with the purpose of preserving Ancilla's legacy of providing two-year degree programs. Both institutions hope this partnership will provide students access to more course offerings while supporting the growth of Catholic-based higher education.

The arrangement, approved by the Boards of Trustees of both colleges, is set to take effect in July 2021. The decision is the culmination of a two year search by Ancilla College to find a perfect university to partner with. The partnership represents a collaboration between two institutions that share goals and a common philosophy, according to Marian University President Daniel J. Elsener. "This is a collaboration between two Catholic institutions with a shared mission." Elsener said. "The opportunity for Marian and Ancilla's respective boards of trustees, communities, and founding orders, the Sisters of St. Francis of Oldenburg and the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ (PHJC), to partner in strengthening the mission of Catholic higher education is the result of two powerful visions meeting in a most fortuitous time and manner."

A new institution will be formed as a result of this partnership. Ancilla College of Marian University will operate at the current campuses of Ancilla College and Marian University, in Donaldson and Indianapolis, respectively. In addition to an increased course options, administrators also intend to provide a greater amount of internship and job opportunities to students and alumni in both urban and rural areas. Ancilla College President Michele Dvorak stressed the long term impacts of this new partnership, "This strategic approach includes a long-range goal: to secure more opportunities for Ancilla alumni, current students and those in our local surrounding counties who seek further education in the region," Dr. Dvorak said. "Education rooted in values will be a beacon of light and hope for the future. We believe Marian University commits to not only the mission, but also to fulfilling the mutual goal of advanced academic opportunities."

To ensure the success of this partnership, a plan is being developed which includes an evaluation of marketing strategies, an assessment of facilities, and the development of a communication plan. One shared goal of the partnership is to increase college attendance to the region. In Marshall County, where Ancilla College is located, along with neighboring Starke County, less than 25% of residents have achieved a bachelor's degree or higher. Ancilla College of Marian University hopes to encourage a reciprocal relationship with the community, providing education while increasing enrollment. The collaboration is a high priority for officials at both colleges, both because of the expansion opportunities, and because of the shared missions. John Chandler, Chair of the Board of Trustees at Ancilla College said. "Marian University is committed to continuing the mission of serving Northern Indiana's rural area and we are elated to bring more opportunities and resources to Ancilla students and faculty."

Additional details about this collaboration will be announced during the 2020-21 academic year.
