Spring semester plans unveiled, Purdue University Fort Wayne to stay the course

Purdue University will continue to offer in-person learning at the Fort Wayne campus for the Spring 2021 semester.

In a statement released November 2, 2020, Purdue University Fort Wayne explained that most classes will continue to be taught in-person, while still offering some class options with online or hybrid formats. The plan was developed in coordination with students, administrators, and faculty leaders. The goal is to provide a safe learning environment by continuing the measures taken for the fall semester. This is meant to ensure that the traditional college experience is minimally disrupted for new and returning students.

While continuing to follow CDC and Indiana Department of Health recommended protocols, the University plans to offer a majority of classes in the traditional face-to-face format, with some modifications. The plan will extend the following efforts:

  • Free cloth mask distribution
  • Stations providing free access to hand sanitizer and sanitizing wipes
  • Enforcement of face mask and social distancing policies
  • Recommendations to students and faculty to follow the same masking and distancing guidelines in outdoor areas
  • Reconfigured classrooms
  • Deep-cleaning and sanitizing of classrooms and community spaces
  • Cancelation or postponement of large events and gatherings

Plans for the spring semester were made with input from students, staff, and administrators. Overwhelmingly, students stated that access to in-person classes is a high priority. Administrators were able to build on what they learned over the past nine months of dealing with new constraints brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. Students and faculty seeking the latest news on infection rates, protocols, and resources available can access the PFW Prepared website. In addition to basic guidelines and informational resources, students can also find help with mental health assistance and financial assistance.

Chancellor Ronald L. Elsenbaumer said in a statement that "Our goal in maintaining current operations for spring is to create as little disruption as possible for current students and to offer a traditional college experience to students who are joining us for the first time. We want all of our students to have access to a high-quality education, and we are committed to ensuring a campus environment that puts their health, safety, and well-being first and foremost." Priority enrollment for spring is now open to seniors, juniors, honors students, students with disabilities, and student-athletes. Registration will open for sophomores November 9 and for Freshman November 16.
