Beckfield College announces two new programs in sonography and massage therapy

Beckfield College adapts to pandemic restrictions and increased demands by offering an expansion of degree programs available. Adapting to a virtual learning model, while continuing to provide student services.

Two new programs are available to students at Beckfield College. An associate degree program in Diagnostic medical sonography and a twelve month diploma program in medical massage therapy are being offered in response to growing demand from employers. An increase in prospective students, attributed to layoffs due to COVID-19, also played a part in prompting the program expansion.

The expansion of programs is just one way Beckfield is adapting and thriving in the COVID-19 era. Past experience has shown that in times of economic recession, certain fields become more attractive due to their resilience in a slow economy. As Diane Wolfer, president of Beckfield College states, "During times of economic and employment crisis, we offer our students training for industries and professions that typically withstand a downturn. Our career-oriented programs include nursing, healthcare and medical massage therapy."

Wolfer went on to explain that as Kentucky opens back up, college administrators are recognizing a need in the community for new health care professionals. The school is working on the details of lab instruction for the two new programs, keeping in mind the additional safety measures needed to adapt to pandemic restrictions. Strategies for health and safety include smaller class sizes, providing students with protective equipment, and adding stations for sanitizing hands and equipment.

In a July press release announcing the two new programs, Beckfield College pointed out that it was able to quickly respond to the COVID-19 pandemic because many of the courses offered were already available online. This made the transition smoother, allowing the college to add the new programs. Administrators also moved the admissions and financial aid offices online, transferring these services to a virtual environment.
